Instructions for downloading software
(from our "Helpful Info" section):
Click on the "Download" link to start the download. Save it into your
computer (be sure to note which directory you saved it to). When it's finished,
click on "Open" or "Run" to start the install. If that
doesn't work, click on Start, then on Run and then on Browse (find where you
saved it), click on the file you saved, and then on Open and finally OK. This
will start the installation of the software.
Adobe Acrobat Reader
This is the free program provided by Adobe to read PDF (Portable Document
Format) files. This type of file is used to ensure the document looks the same
no matter what type of computer it is viewed on, and can be very useful for
printing forms. Choose the version that is right for your system at:
www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2_allversions.html
or you can get versions for Windows XP (latest patched)
version 8, and for Windows 98
version 6 (unpatched) is the latest
version available.
An alternative that is smaller and faster to run is Foxit Reader, at
available
here
Diskeeper Lite
Download and run dklite.exe
Disk fragmentation causes crashes, slowdowns, freeze-ups and even total
system failures. Diskeeper Lite is a free short version introduction to
full-featured Diskeeper. Diskeeper Lite can only analyze fragmentation levels
and run manual defragmentation on one disk volume at a time and can help anyone
to select the right automated defragmentation software for homes and/or
business sites.
Spybot
As this can be a confusing download from their website, you can
get version 160 here. Also
download the spybot includes file. First
install/run/open the spybotsd160.exe file, but at the end do not start the
program - uncheck the box that says to launch/start the program, then click
Finish. Next install/run/open the spybotsd_includes.exe file, and click
Install, then when it's done (it runs very quickly) click Close. This will do a
major update to your program. It still needs updating, but the biggest part
will be done. Then start the Spybot program from the new icon on your desktop.
BE SURE TO IMMUNIZE after updating - this is critical to the protection of your
computer. NOTE: Please DO NOT let it install "Tea Timer" - UNCHECK
that option when installing. It complicates future installs and uninstalls, and
even updates of software.
Time Zone Editor for Windows
Daylight Savings Time (DST) CHANGED as of March, 2007. For those who
have newer computers, and automatic updates from Microsoft (NOT recommended, by
the way, as you likely get more than you bargained for, or thought you were
agreeing to - see our "Security" page for more information), your
computer should already be updated to change to/from Daylight Savings Time on
the second Sunday in March and the first Sunday in November (instead of the
previous dates in April and October).
For those who need updating, and have Windows XP,
we have downloaded a little software tool from Microsoft that allows the
editing of the time zone, and the automatic settings for the changes to and
from Daylight Savings Time. Download the tzedit.exe
file, saving it to your computer's hard drive, and then Open/Run it. Click
"Unzip" and it will put two files into the C:\Program Files
directory, in a folder called TZEdit. (Note: if you need help to unzip
the file, get WinZip below.)
Go to that directory/folder by clicking on "Start" then "My
Computer" (or "Windows Explorer" in older computers), then on
"C:", "Program Files" and finally on "TZEdit".
You'll see two files there, double click on the one named
"TZEDIT.EXE" to open it.
In the little window that pops up, select your time zone, ie. "Eastern
Time (US & Canada)" on the left, then click on the "Edit"
button on the right. Use the little arrows beside the boxes to set the Second
Sunday of March and First Sunday of November for most of North America.
(Saskatchewan and some other areas choose not to change times, or not at the
same time. Check your local information for what to set.) Click OK and Close to
finish the process.
WinZip
If you need help to unzip files (that are compressed or
"zipped" to make the smaller for transferring or downloading),
a good product is Winzip. We have an older version here that you can
download and install for personal use.
WS_FTP
Click here to download ws_ftple.exe and save it
to disk. When it finishes, choose either "Run" or "Open" to
install ws_ftp. (It is a very quick install. Select "Other" and then
"At home" and "For Personal Use". The settings to use for
any ftp program (click on "New" in ws_ftp) should be given to you by
your Internet Service Provider. (For remote support for your computer from
Computer Tamers, please contact us for the settings.)
The settings you'll need are:
Host:
Userid:
Password:
Click on the "Advanced" tab at the top of the "Session
Properties" window, and click to put a check mark beside "Passive
transfers".
To transfer a file, click on the "Local" (your computer side) or
"Remote" and then on the arrow in the middle to go to the other
"side". This transfers files to and/or from your computer and the
website / web server.
ZoneAlarm
Since Microsoft isn't going to update Windows 98/ME nymore, neither is
ZoneAlarm. This does NOT mean you're not protected if you have older copies of
Windows! Keep your ZoneAlarm installed, and running. It will continue to
protect you just as it has in the past. Do not try to download the new update
(which the program will notify you is ready). Just set the reminder to remind
again in 60 days and do the same when it comes up then. It's the easiest way to
ignore it (instead of getting daily reminders).
Get the last version of ZoneAlarm
for Windows 98/ME here.
